Rea Gopane Takes Sharp Swing At Nota: “All That Talk, Just to Build MacG’s Empire?” South African podcaster turned producer Rea Gopane has reignited industry conversation following a candid interview with Yanos Mag, where he criticised music executive Nota Baloyi while introducing his latest musical venture, an AI-powered amapiano album “Reatlegile.”

Known for his outspoken nature and past controversies, Gopane reflected on a journey shaped by public scrutiny and reinvention. His return to the spotlight comes after a period marked by legal battles, including a high-profile defamation case involving media personality Bonang Matheba linked to remarks about the late rapper AKA.
During the interview, Rea Gopane did not hold back when addressing Nota’s long-standing claims about his influence in the industry. He questioned the credibility of those assertions, pointing to Nota’s eventual alignment with popular podcaster MacG. Gopane suggested that, despite repeated statements about independence and ownership, Nota ultimately contributed to building another platform rather than establishing his own.
“He always says, ‘I have Kwesta’s masters, I get money from Kwesta’s catalogue, I’ve written all of his stuff, I’m a boss,’ blah blah,” Gopane said. “Only for you to go and work for MacG. The way he was going on every single podcast, I would’ve thought he would start his own thing, but he just ended up building up MacG’s dream.”
The remarks challenge Nota’s public image as an independent force within the industry. While he has often presented himself as a key architect behind major successes, particularly linked to Kwesta and early podcasting culture, his association with MacG’s platform continues to spark debate.
Gopane’s comments arrive at a time when he is carving out a new lane for himself. After stepping back from podcasting following intense scrutiny and legal battles, he is now focused on music, embracing artificial intelligence as a tool for innovation.
His upcoming project, titled Reatlegile, blends traditional amapiano elements with AI-assisted production. Early previews of tracks have already generated buzz online, with listeners highlighting the project’s fresh sound and unconventional creative process.
Gopane has made it clear that he sees AI as more than a trend. Instead, he views it as a way to challenge industry gatekeeping and empower independent creators to produce music more efficiently.
This return marks more than just a musical release. It signals a personal reset for Gopane, shifting from controversy to creativity while still maintaining his unfiltered voice.
