Setbacks fuel Venter’s comeback

Ruan Venter is ready to reset and make up for lost time as the Lions push for a Vodacom URC playoff spot.

The Lions forward will return to action against Edinburgh at Ellis Park this weekend, determined to reignite his season after a frustrating start.

The 23-year-old has endured a stop-start campaign, serving a four-match suspension before suffering a concussion in his comeback game against the Sharks.

Now, with just two appearances under his belt in 2026, Venter is eager to build momentum heading into the business end of the season.

“The break was not nice and I have only played in two matches this year,” he said. “Fortunately both of those matches were against other South African teams. It helps your confidence if you do well against those teams and then you should be able to stand your ground against overseas teams as well.

“There are still six matches left before the playoffs, where you can build momentum. I’m looking forward to getting back on the field and proving myself.”

STATE OF THE URC: SA trio have it all to do

The one-time Springbok’s versatility remains a major asset for the Lions. Equally comfortable at flank or lock, he is embracing the challenge of adapting his game to suit the team’s needs.

“I have no problem being used at lock, and I actually enjoy it,” he said. “I especially enjoy scrumming, and at lock you can make a bigger contribution. Wherever the team needs me, I will fulfil a role.

“I am not yet as comfortable at No 4 lock, but I am trying to get better every day and master the finer details that come with it.”
