Stogie T Shares Insightful Take On The Depth Behind The Word ‘Rapper.’ South African hip-hop icon Stogie T recently offered a deeply reflective take on identity, creativity, and what it truly means to be called a rapper. The veteran lyricist shared the candid thoughts in a heartfelt Instagram post that resonated with fans and fellow artists alike.

The award-winning musician, celebrated for his poetic lyricism and thought-provoking storytelling, revealed that the conversation began at home during a light but meaningful exchange with his wife.
“My wife doesn’t like it when I say I am a rapper,” he wrote. “She imagines the term to be reductive. In her mind, I am more than a rapper. I am a musician, a writer, a thinker, a pastor, a father, a leader.”
But Stogie T offered a perspective that reframed the entire discussion.
“But here is the kicker man. I have been unsuccessfully trying to tell her and everyone that cares to listen that ‘rapper’ means all of that.”
For the Johannesburg-based artist, who was born in Tanzania and has been a defining voice in South African hip-hop since the early 2000s, the label carries far more depth than many assume. In his view, the word “rapper” represents a complex blend of artistry, intellect, spirituality, family values, and community leadership.
The rapper also reflected on his earlier creative work with Tumi and the Volume, using it to illustrate how labels often fail to capture the true spirit of hip-hop.
“Moving Picture Frames was originally written for Tumi and the Volume,” he explained. “It was our response to being called political rap. Didn’t care for that title, so I wrote a song about a middle-class black housewife in a South African suburb. There’s your politics.”
The song appears on the group’s 2010 album Pick a Dream and became a subtle yet powerful statement. Rather than delivering overt political commentary, the track explores everyday suburban life, revealing how ordinary experiences can carry powerful social and political meaning in post-apartheid South Africa.
Stogie T also took a moment to celebrate the musicians who helped shape that sound, praising the band’s live instrumentation and creative chemistry.
“I have the best band in the world,” he wrote. “In the time it takes to smoke a cigar, they tell the story of not just my musical life, but theirs and South Africa’s.”
Toward the end of the post, the veteran artist hinted at more collaborative ideas and deeper themes that may surface in future work.
“I really be on that collab time. Wait till I put you on to God’s vision of unity and oneness. For another time.”
The reflection captures a philosophy that has defined Stogie T’s career. For him, hip-hop has always been a platform for storytelling, introspection, and cultural dialogue rather than a narrow musical category. From his early spoken-word influenced performances to his later solo projects exploring identity, faith, and purpose, he continues to challenge conventional ideas of what a rapper can be.
For longtime supporters, the message serves as another reminder of why Stogie T remains one of South Africa’s most respected voices in hip-hop. His work continues to blend intellect, spirituality, and musical depth in a way that keeps the genre evolving.
