Stormers boss hails unsung hero

John Dobson says the Stormers have been guilty of not giving Marcel Theunissen the credit and plaudits he deserves.

The lively No 8 put in another workmanlike performance and filled the boots of the injured Evan Roos with aplomb in the Stormers’ impressive 32-19 win over the Bulls at Loftus on Saturday. He was especially impressive in the air at lineout time and making his presence felt across the park as the Stormers halted the Bulls’ momentum in Pretoria.

DOBBO: Stormers’ most dominant performance

Dobson admitted that even the coaching staff have sometimes overlooked the impact of the hard-grafting forward.

“As coaches, sometimes you brand players. When Evan Roos gets a hit, I want to send him to the compression chamber in Simon’s Town or fly him to NASA to get fit. Sometimes we coaches get seduced, that we forget about this bloke.

“One thing about Marcel – he’s always there. He never missing a training session, he gets three line outs tapped out of the air and he gets to every breakdown.

“I think we need to be better at showing him more love and respect and he put in a giant performance. We’re guilty of not appreciating what we have in a bloke like that.”

The bonus-point win over the Bulls has now catapulted the Stormers to second on the Vodacom URC table, after going into the derby in 6th place.
