Emma King is the founder of the Thomas Jackson Foundation, a place of safety for homeless pets. She grew up sharing their home with dogs, cats, and horses. “I was always surrounded by animals. There was always a pet curled up on my lap or on my bed. We always had a close relationship. Over the years, I got involved with animal charities, but I always knew I wanted to be more than a volunteer. I wanted to create something lasting.”
This dream became a reality with the establishment of the Thomas Jackson Foundation. It is named after two deeply loved dogs whose lives ended way too soon. “Jackson was my soulmate. He died after being with me for only 17 months. Thomas, a Pitbull, died at the age of five years due to a brain tumour. Their memory is the driving force behind everything I do.”
In 2024, Emma bought a farm in Gordon’s Bay. Here, she could dedicate her life and time and share her heart and home with neglected animals. “This place of refuge is the last haven for dogs and cats that never have to be neglected, be afraid, or be hurt ever again. This is way more than just a piece of land. It is a lifeline.”
At any given time, Emma cares for more than 140 animals on her property and in the kennels. The rescues include abused animals and animals that have been saved from euthanasia because, after months or even years, they have not been adopted. The animals here are not just numbers. They are individuals with names, faces, and stories. “This is not a hobby. This is my purpose, but it carries a lot of weight. The food, medical care, vaccinations, sterilisations, microchips, and kennel fees are more than R100 000 every month. Donations are rarely more than R2000 per month. So, every donation, or bag of food, or adoption, changes a life.” These expenses fall solely on Emma’s shoulders. She has her own business and dentistry practice, and at the same time she continues to rescue animals, arrange adoptions, and visit the veterinarian clinic. “I celebrate every adoption as it is a victory. There are many ups and downs, but there is also joy in what I do. When I see adopted pets living their best life, then I know why I continue with what I do.” The Thomas Jackson Foundation cannot survive on passion alone. With support and help from the community, she can continue to ensure that no animal is left behind and that everyone is taken care of.
