Tony Forbes Speaks On Bheki Cele Saying That AKA Murdered Anele Tembe. Tony Forbes, father of the late rapper Kiernan “AKA” Forbes, has criticised former police minister Bheki Cele after Cele told Parliament that police believed Anele “Nellie” Tembe may have been murdered. Forbes said the remarks have reignited painful speculation and threatened to undermine a careful legal process.
“The one thing I am very concerned about is comments being made. For example, Bheki Cele at the Ad Hoc Committee making the comments that the police believe Kiernan murdered Anele. His words still carry a lot of weight, and there are people on social media saying we always suspected something, and that confirms it,” he said during an interview with Sizwe Mpofu-Walsh on SMWX Podcast. Tony Forbes added that the family wants closure but expects it to come through a fair and balanced process.
Forbes stressed that the National Prosecuting Authority examined the dockets, affidavits, forensic reports and expert witness statements before deciding there were no grounds to prosecute. He said that the decision was not taken lightly and was not the result of willy-nilly action or external interference in the Western Cape.
Cele’s testimony to the Ad Hoc Committee, in which he said police had not ruled out homicide in Tembe’s 2021 fall from a Cape Town hotel balcony, sparked a fresh wave of public comment. The former minister told MPs that investigators had pursued lines of inquiry consistent with a possible homicide probe but that prosecutors repeatedly required further work and ultimately did not proceed to court.
Forbes urged that the inquest be allowed to run its course without premature judgment in the court of public opinion.
