There are 25 000 registered universities globally, SA has 26. On the international academic stage, eight of our universities feature in the TOP 1000 of the 2025 Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) – also known as the Shanghai Ranking. The ARWU ranks the world’s top 1 000 institutions annually, based on research output, academic achievement, and global impact. Rhodes University, previously in the top 800 recently withdrew from the rankings exercise citing unacceptable bias.
