Waje opens up about a surprising experience from her early music days

Nigerian singer and powerhouse vocalist Waje has revealed that she was never compensated for her contribution to P-Square’s 2007 smash hit, Do Me, the song that helped introduce her voice to a national audience.

Speaking on The Honest Bunch Podcast, Waje, whose real name is Aituaje Iruobe, reflected on her early struggles in the Nigerian music industry and the lessons she learned along the way.

“I didn’t earn a dime from P-Square’s Do Me,” she said, recalling the experience with a blend of humour and honesty. “That song opened doors for me, but it also taught me a lot about the business side of music.”

Do Me, featured on P-Square’s Game Over album, became one of the defining hits of the late 2000s and remains a fan favourite to this day. Waje’s soaring vocals were a key part of the track’s success, yet she said many people didn’t even know it was her voice on the record.

“Imagine being in Onitsha market and trying to convince people that’s my voice every time Do Me is played,” she said with a laugh. “They’d look at me like, ‘Who are you?’ They didn’t believe me.”

Waje further revealed that she wasn’t featured in the music video because she didn’t have a passport at the time the visuals were shot. That, she explained, limited the public recognition she might have received for the song’s success.

While the experience from the P-Square’s Do Me left her feeling unappreciated at the time, Waje said it ultimately pushed her to take control of her career, establish her own identity, and demand the respect her talent deserved.

Now celebrated as one of Nigeria’s most powerful and respected vocalists, Waje looks back on that moment as both a painful and pivotal chapter in her journey. “It taught me the importance of structure, contracts, and value,” she said. “Sometimes, your biggest lesson comes wrapped in your biggest break.”
