Willie to blow Bok coaches whistle?

Willie le Roux has been tipped to help Rassie Erasmus groom the next generation of Springbok back-three generals once the two-time World Cup winner hangs up his boots.

Speaking on RugbyPass’ Boks Office, Nick Mallett and Gary Gold believe Le Roux’s experience and rugby IQ could be invaluable in a consultancy role post-retirement.

Highlighting Le Roux’s evolution as a player, Mallett also suggested that Erasmus will phase out the 98-Test fullback once he reaches his 100th cap this year but retain his expertise.

“Initially, he was just a talented fullback, but now he’s a general at the back. His ability to time his passes perfectly is exceptional,” the former Bok head coach said.

“He’s not only a player but effectively a coach on the field. His understanding of when to pass – never too early or too late – sets him apart as an intelligent rugby player.

“He might even become a back-three consultant. With youngsters like [Damian] Willemse and [Aphelele] Fassi, having Willie around to guide them would be a smart move.”

“Willie’s very invested in the team,” ex-Bok assistant coach Gold added. “Players like Kurt-Lee Arendse and Canan Moodie love playing with him because he’s constantly guiding them.

“At Wasps, even Danny Cipriani appreciated his presence because he effectively acted as a coach on the field.”

Mallett and Gold agreed that, while the 35-year-old Le Roux has faced criticism, his influence on the Boks’ attack is undeniable.

“He’s got a real feel for the game,” Mallett said. “That’s why Erasmus has stuck with him. The attack always functions better with Willie on the field.

“Rassie has created a golden period for these players by maintaining a stable coaching environment. Willie, in particular, has benefitted from that.”

Gold further praised Le Roux’s leadership skills: “He’s very good with the youngsters, helping them develop while keeping the team environment positive.”
