Yung Swiss Says He Pioneered Modern SA Trap Sound. Yung Swiss has stepped into the ongoing conversation about who shaped the current wave of melodic, trap-influenced hip-hop dominating local airwaves.

Taking to X, Yung Swiss addressed what seems to be aimed at him. He made it clear that his contributions to the scene are not to be overlooked.
“U barking up the wrong tree here gents.. we pioneered this sound relax,” Swiss wrote. “The kids fw me in real life, and all pull up to my house coz I see them. Shi LaCabra pulled up a few days ago and played me his upcoming album. And didn’t I give y’all music with J Molley? We damn near did a tape. Just learn to take constructive criticism; it’s not that deep. If there’s one person that gets y’all, it’s ME.”
Swiss’s statement comes as South African hip-hop continues to evolve, fusing trap beats, melodic flows, and street-centred storytelling, styles he helped popularise in the mid-2010s. Known for his smooth delivery and reflective lyrics, he rose to prominence with hits like “David Genaro” and the collaborative smash “Mayo” alongside DJ Speedsta, Tellaman, Shane Eagle, and Frank Casino.
His work with J Molley, another key figure in the trap and SoundCloud-era movement, remains a highlight. Their 2017 track “Cold” displayed both artists weaving melodic hooks over atmospheric beats. Swiss also suggested that an almost-completed joint project with Molley shows how early his influence touched the scene.
The mention of LaCabra adds a modern dimension. The rising artist, recognised for his raw, introspective style, recently visited Yung Swiss to share a preview of his new album. This interaction underscores a mentorship dynamic and illustrates the respect younger artists have for the veteran.
This post comes amid wider discussions within SA hip-hop, including defenders of veterans like DJ Speedsta, who has played a pivotal role in moving underground talent into the mainstream. Swiss himself has publicly highlighted Speedsta’s impact on the SoundCloud-era artists.
