Zim Journalist Hopewell Chin’ono Reflects On AKA’s Pivotal Role In His Freedom From Zimbabwean Prison. A revealing exchange on The Hustlers Corner podcast saw award-winning Zimbabwean journalist and activist Hopewell Chin’ono open up about a defining moment in modern African activism, when a South African rap superstar AKA amplified his fight for freedom beyond Zimbabwe’s borders.
Speaking to host DJ Sbu, Chin’ono recalled spending 45 difficult days behind bars. He believes his eventual release was driven not only by legal efforts and diplomatic channels, but by mounting public pressure that surged from outside Zimbabwe. A significant wave of that pressure came from South Africa, energised by the late rap icon AKA.
“I was in prison for 45 days, and one of the things that pushed them (Zimbabwean Government) to release us was the pressure that was coming from South Africa,” Chin’ono said. “I remember people like AKA had started a #ZimLivesMatter which went viral internationally.”
What started as impassioned social media posts from AKA, already one of the continent’s most influential artists, quickly evolved into a global digital campaign. The hashtag #ZimLivesMatter cut across timelines and borders, shifting Zimbabwe’s political tensions from a regional issue to an international flashpoint. It pushed audiences far beyond Southern Africa to confront the arrests and the broader crackdown unfolding under President Emmerson Mnangagwa.

The diplomatic ripple effect soon followed. South African President Cyril Ramaphosa responded to growing outrage at home by dispatching a formal delegation to Harare to raise concerns directly. Mnangagwa declined to meet the envoys personally, instead referring them to junior officials, a move widely viewed as a sign of discomfort amid escalating scrutiny.
For Chin’ono, the episode illustrated how activism has transformed in the digital era. Influence is no longer confined to political offices or newsrooms. A musician with conviction and a massive platform can amplify injustice to a point where silence becomes impossible. AKA did more than post a hashtag.
