2026 World Cup: 30 EU representatives demand investigation into Infantino

Numerous reports have revealed that over 30 representatives in the EU have demanded an investigation by FIFA into its president, Infantino.

More than 30 members of the European Parliament have called for an investigation into FIFA president Gianni Infantino following the governing body’s controversial decision to overturn the suspension of United States forward Folarin Balogun during the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

According to Euronews, the lawmakers launched the initiative on Tuesday, arguing that the decision has raised serious concerns about FIFA’s independence and whether political influence played a role in the disciplinary process.

The parliamentarians are circulating a letter urging football associations across the European Union to request a formal FIFA review into how the decision was reached and whether outside political pressure affected the outcome.

Why are lawmakers calling for an investigation?

Balogun, one of the United States’ standout performers at the tournament, was sent off during his side’s victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina on July 1. Under FIFA regulations, the red card would ordinarily have resulted in a one-match suspension.

However, FIFA’s disciplinary committee later overturned the suspension, allowing the striker to feature in the United States’ Round of 16 clash against Belgium.

The decision came shortly after US President Donald Trump publicly revealed that he had spoken with Infantino about Balogun’s red card, describing the dismissal as unfair and suggesting it deserved another review.

Although Trump acknowledged discussing the matter with the FIFA president, he insisted he did not instruct FIFA on what decision to make. He said he simply believed both teams should have their strongest players available for such an important match.

Despite Balogun’s availability, the United States suffered a 4-1 defeat to Belgium and exited the tournament.
