Rassie: Boks have spread the net

Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus says “everyone received a fair start” at this year’s alignment camps ahead of the 2026 international season.

The Boks wrapped up their second and final in-person alignment camp in Cape Town on Thursday, with more than 60 players involved across the two gatherings.

The camps featured strategy sessions with the coaching staff, gym work and meetings aimed at ensuring players understand the structures and expectations ahead of the season.

“What we’ve tried to introduce with the alignment camps was to bring in young players who haven’t been part of our system, and others who have only been to one or two camps,” Erasmus said.

“In that sense, the players are starting to feel more comfortable. They also got the opportunity to know the coaches and a little more about the structures.

“I think there have been more than 60 players in the two alignment camps, so in terms of spreading the net and ensuring that everyone received a fair start, we feel that has been done.”

The Bok coach added that the real test will come once on-field preparations begin next month.

“It’s easy to talk now. Obviously, it has to translate onto the field,” Erasmus said. “There are still guys playing overseas and others finishing up their seasons, but generally I think we are in a good place as a group.”

Erasmus is expected to name his first training squad within the next two weeks ahead of the Boks’ season opener against the Barbarians in Gqeberha on 20 June.

That fixture forms part of a double-header which will also feature a South Africa A side against Zimbabwe.
