World Rugby unveils new six-year plan

World Rugby has launched a new six-year strategy aimed at growing the game, expanding audiences and strengthening player welfare.

The governing body said the plan was developed following consultation with unions, regional bodies, players, fans and commercial partners.

The strategy outlines World Rugby’s priorities through to 2031, including growing participation, increasing investment in the women’s game, improving fan engagement and supporting member unions.

It also places a strong focus on player welfare and the long-term sustainability of the sport.

World Rugby said the new roadmap builds on several major developments already introduced or planned for the global game, including the Nations Championship, World Rugby Nations Cup and the revamped WXV women’s competition structure, all set to begin in 2026.

The governing body also highlighted the continued growth of women’s rugby and the rising global profile of the Rugby World Cup.

World Rugby said the strategy is designed to help rugby adapt to an increasingly competitive sporting and entertainment landscape while remaining aligned with the values of the game.

Among the organisation’s stated goals are strengthening grassroots rugby, increasing the commercial value of major tournaments and broadening rugby’s global audience over the next six years.
