Waratahs on the hunt for a new coach

Waratahs coach Dan McKellar stepped down with immediate effect on Monday following another disappointing Super Rugby Pacific campaign.

Nine.com reports that McKellar informed players and staff of his decision after two seasons in charge, with the Waratahs having failed to qualify for the playoffs in both 2025 and 2026.

The Sydney-based team finished eighth this year – the lowest-placed Australian club – after winning just five of their 14 matches.

McKellar’s departure comes only weeks after attack coach and former England World Cup winner Mike Catt also left the Waratahs.

“I have decided to step away from my role as head coach of the NSW Waratahs for personal reasons,” McKellar said in a statement.

“I step away knowing I have given my all to help turn the Waratahs’ fortunes around over the last two seasons. As a coaching group, we have all worked incredibly hard to drive positive and necessary change.”

Waratahs chairman Tony Crawford said: “Dan has made a massive impact on the club since joining, both on and off the field.

“His work ethic and commitment to deliver his coaching programme were second to none and he always put the Waratahs first.”

Attention will now turn to McKellar’s successor.

Former All Blacks coach Scott Robertson has been linked with the vacancy, while former Wallabies coach Michael Cheika – the only man to guide the Waratahs to a Super Rugby title – is also viewed as a leading contender.

Other names reportedly under consideration include Chris Whitaker, Scott Wisemantel, Stephen Hoiles, Chris Latham and John Manenti.
