Lions sign Saffa journeyman

The Lions have reportedly continued their recruitment drive by signing a versatile back from an English Premiership club.

According to Rapport, Boeta Chamberlain is heading back to South Africa after being released by the Newcastle Red Bulls.

Capable of playing at flyhalf and fullback, the 27-year-old is expected to provide valuable cover for the Lions following the departures of Gianni Lombard, Lubabalo Dobela and Tapiwa Mafura.

Lombard has joined the Sharks, while Dobela will continue his career with French club Narbonne. Mafura, meanwhile, has also left the Lions after helping Zimbabwe qualify for the 2027 World Cup, although his next destination has yet to be confirmed.

A former Bishops standout, Chamberlain joined Newcastle from the Bulls in 2025 after spending five seasons with the Sharks.

If the move is completed, he will become the latest South African to return home from overseas to join the Lions.

The union has already confirmed the signing of Springbok loosehead prop Boan Venter from Edinburgh, while former Lions lock Hyron Andrews has also returned to Johannesburg after his stint with the Sale Sharks.
