Van Graan: Russell can hurt Springboks

Johann van Graan says Finn Russell has the quality to pose a major threat to the Springboks if he is fit for Saturday’s Nations Championship showdown at Loftus Versfeld.

The Bath coach, who worked with Russell throughout the club season, says the 33-year-old’s rugby intelligence and decision-making set him apart from almost every other No 10 in the game.

“Finn’s feel for the game is incredible,” Van Graan told Rapport. “He is outstanding with the decisions he makes and has anticipation like very few.”

Russell sat out Scotland’s opening-round clash against Argentina in Córdoba, but reports suggest he is closing in on a return after recovering from the calf injury that ended his club season prematurely.

Van Graan believes the mercurial flyhalf has consistently proved himself among the elite.

“He is one of the best flyhalves in the world.

“He was Racing 92’s starting flyhalf and has also been Bath’s starting flyhalf.

“He was also a member of the Bath team who won the treble in 2025, so he’s been achieving at the highest level for some time now.”

While Russell’s attacking flair is well known, Van Graan said the Scotland star’s greatest qualities extend beyond what supporters see on match day.

“One of his best qualities is how he moves on from a mistake and then produces something brilliant afterwards. He is a player I really enjoy coaching.”
