New Lions scrumhalf Asad Moos admits leaving Cape Town wasn’t an easy decision, but believes the fierce competition for the No 9 jersey in Johannesburg will make him a better player.
The 22-year-old made his Lions debut off the bench in Saturday’s Currie Cup victory over the Pumas after joining them from the Stormers. A former Junior Springbok, Moos also represented UCT in the Varsity Cup.
“I was definitely a little nervous, especially during the week leading up to the game,” Moos said on Tuesday. “On the day, once I was sitting on the bench watching my teammates play, I wasn’t nearly as nervous.”
The Lions are well stocked at scrumhalf, with Zian Cilliers and Layton Horn featuring during the Currie Cup, while Springbok Morné van den Berg, former Junior Bok Haashim Pead and South Africa A representative Nico Steyn are all part of the club’s plans for the upcoming Vodacom URC season.
Despite the depth in the position, Moos believes the competition is exactly what he needs.
“It was a bit of a challenge at first coming here knowing there are so many good scrumhalves,” he said.
“But it’s in environments like this that you really grow because you want to play against the best and train with the best. It’s a wonderful opportunity to play alongside Morné, Hash and Nico. It’s good that I get the chance to test myself against them. If I can adapt to their standard, it can only improve my own game.”

Moos is expected to start when the Lions face the winless Bulls XV in Saturday’s Currie Cup clash at the University of Johannesburg.
The Lions’ Currie Cup and URC squads trained together on Tuesday as preparations intensified for a busy few weeks.
New signings Sikhumbuzo Notshe, Boeta Chamberlain and JP du Preez all took part in the session, while flank Siba Mahashe was sidelined with his left ankle in a brace.
