New Maties coach Sean Erasmus has outlined his vision ahead of taking charge at Stellenbosch University.
Erasmus, who enjoyed considerable success during two spells as head coach of Paarl Boys’ High, was confirmed on Friday as Kabamba Floors’ successor and will officially take the reins on 1 September.
Erasmus will coach Maties in the Varsity Cup, WP Super League A and USSA tournaments.
Maties have not won the Varsity Cup since 2019.
“It is an exceptional honour and privilege to follow in the footsteps of great coaches such as Oubaas Markötter and Danie Craven,” Erasmus said in a Stellenbosch University statement.
“I look forward to establishing a culture that everyone is proud of and creating an environment in which players can grow and realise their dreams as Maties.”
Maties Sport head of rugby Drikus Hancke said Erasmus had emerged from a highly competitive recruitment process.
“Sean is one of the country’s most respected high-performance coaches, with a proven ability to build successful programmes and develop people.”

Erasmus built his reputation at Paarl Boys’ High, where he had two stints in charge. During his first spell, Boishaai went unbeaten against South African opposition for three consecutive seasons from 2015 to 2017.
He subsequently spent several years working within the Lions’ junior structures before returning to Paarl Boys’ High in 2022.
