The rapper and former Wrecking Crew member was asked a simple question on social media about who he considers the best rapper in South Africa. His response left little room for interpretation.

“The best rapper in South Africa is A-Reece and the best Hip Hop artist is Nasty C,” he wrote.

The distinction speaks to the ongoing conversation around what separates being a great rapper from being a complete hip-hop artist.

For Ex Global, A-Reece represents the gold standard when it comes to pure rap ability. The Pretoria-born artist has built a reputation around his sharp pen, introspective writing, layered storytelling and unwavering commitment to his sound. His lyricism has earned him major recognition, including multiple South African Hip Hop Awards wins for Lyricist of the Year, while his loyal fanbase continues to back his artistry.

Nasty C, meanwhile, represents a broader definition of hip-hop excellence. The Durban-born star has combined lyricism with commercial success, international collaborations, major performances and a strong global presence. His recent Best Hip Hop Album victory at the 2026 South African Music Awards for his independent project Free has further strengthened his position as one of the country’s most accomplished hip-hop artists.

Ex Global’s take also lands in the middle of a long-running debate surrounding A-Reece and Nasty C. The two have often been compared by fans, with discussions frequently centred on who has the stronger pen, catalogue, influence and overall impact.

Despite the comparisons, the artists have not maintained a public feud, and they have even appeared together on Stogie T’s “Four Horsemen,” showing that the rivalry has largely existed within fan conversations rather than between the artists themselves.

Ex Global’s comments also carry an interesting layer of context given his history with A-Reece. He was part of the Wrecking Crew collective during the group’s influential run and has therefore had a close view of A-Reece’s growth as an artist. At the same time, he has recently spoken positively about Nasty C’s Free, while offering more critical observations about some of A-Reece’s recent work.

Ultimately, Ex Global’s ranking does not appear designed to end the debate. If anything, it gives fans more ammunition to keep it going.

His take draws a clear line between technical rapping and overall artistry. In his eyes, A-Reece owns the conversation when it comes to pure bars, while Nasty C stands out as the stronger all-round hip-hop artist.

And judging by the reaction such debates usually generate, South African hip-hop fans are unlikely to agree anytime soon.
