Nomfundo Yekani Set To Host Back To The City 2026. South African hip-hop is gearing up for another major celebration of culture, and this time Nomfundo Yekani will be at the centre of the action.
The rapper has officially been announced as the host of Back to the City 2026, adding another layer of star power to one of the country’s biggest hip-hop gatherings.
Known to many as the “Queen of SA Hip-Hop,” Yekani is expected to bring her trademark energy, authenticity and quick-witted presence to the festival as she takes audiences through a day built around music, street culture and the history of hip-hop.
Born Nomfundo Nkutha and raised in Thokoza, Ekurhuleni, the famed rapper has carved out a distinctive space across both entertainment and music. Her television journey included appearances on Planet TV and SABC 1’s Soccer 411, while she also made it to the final stages of the MTV Base VJ Search.
During the 2020 lockdown, she shifted her focus more heavily towards music, establishing herself as a rapper with bilingual lyricism, sharp wordplay and a sound that draws from both contemporary hip-hop and the spirit of old-school kwaito.
Her musical journey has included projects such as the iStyle Sami EP, as well as collaborations that have continued to strengthen her standing within the culture.
Yekani is also no stranger to Back to the City. Having previously performed and hosted at the festival, her appointment as the official host for the 2026 edition represents a full-circle moment for an artist who has experienced the event from both sides of the microphone.
Back to the City 2026 is scheduled for 10 October at Mary Fitzgerald Square in Newtown, Johannesburg. This year’s festival carries added historical weight as it celebrates 20 years of Back to the City, 50 years since the June 16, 1976 Youth Uprising and 140 years of the City of Johannesburg.
Under the theme “Against All Odds,” the festival aims to honour the resilience of young people and the enduring power of South African hip-hop and street culture.
The international lineup already features Detroit hip-hop pioneers Slum Village and the acclaimed duo Blu & Exile. They will join an expansive local programme featuring around 100 artists, 30 DJs and 40 graffiti writers, alongside MC and DJ battles, skateboarding and basketball activations.
The festival will also feature a cultural village showcasing fashion, food and art, creating a broader celebration of the creative communities that continue to shape Johannesburg’s identity.
With more than 8,600 tickets reportedly already sold, anticipation for the 2026 edition is building. General admission and other ticket packages remain available through Webtickets and selected Pick n Pay outlets.
With Yekani taking control of the microphone, Back to the City 2026 is set to have a host who understands the culture from the inside out.
On 10 October, Mary Fitzgerald Square will once again become a meeting point for hip-hop lovers, with Yekani expected to keep the crowd moving from the opening performance through to the final set.
Against all odds, the culture continues to rise, and Back to the City is preparing to mark another milestone in its story.
