Nasty C Finally Collects SAMA32 Trophy For Best Hip Hop Album Win With Free. Nasty C has finally got his hands on the physical SAMA trophy he earned for Best Hip Hop Album at the 32nd South African Music Awards, weeks after taking home the major accolade.
The Durban-born rapper, whose real name is Nsikayesizwe David Junior Ngcobo, was recently filmed collecting the trophy for his 2025 album Free. The footage, shared by SA hip-hop platform Rap-Kulture ZA, shows Nasty C receiving the hardware in a low-key moment that marks another milestone in his independent career.
Released on 12 September 2025 through his Tall Racks Records imprint, Free became Nasty C’s first fully independent studio album after his exit from Def Jam. The project allowed the rapper to operate outside the traditional major-label structure while exploring a mix of hard-hitting lyricism, melodic production and experimental sounds.
The album features appearances from Blxckie and Usimamane, among others, and was positioned as a reflection of Nasty C’s creative independence and control over his music.
Nasty C’s SAMA32 victory, staged at Sun City Superbowl in August 2026 under the theme “The Future Sounds Like Now Now,” also saw him claim the Best Hip Hop Album category for the third time.
He previously won the award for Strings and Bling in 2019 and Zulu Man with Some Power in 2021. His latest victory adds another major accolade to the rapper’s catalogue while putting further attention on the success of Free outside the major-label system.
Following the ceremony, Nasty C thanked his team and the Ivyson Army for their continued support, particularly through streams and the reception surrounding the album. He also addressed some of the criticism Free faced before its success at the SAMAs, dismissing those earlier doubts as “invalid.”
With the physical trophy now officially in his possession, Nasty C’s SAMA32 win gives Free another significant chapter in its story.
The album has not only become an important release in his catalogue but also represents a defining moment in his transition into a more independent phase of his career.
