SA Rugby CEO Rian Oberholzer has addressed the future of pre-match aeroplane flyovers at Springbok Tests.
Since an SAA Boeing 747 flew over Ellis Park before the 1995 World Cup final, flyovers have become a feature of major Bok matches in South Africa, and Oberholzer says fans can expect to see them again.
“I’m sure our team responsible for the pre-match entertainment intends to do it again at some point in the future,” Oberholzer told Rapport.
His comments come after Airlink’s flyover before the second Rugby’s Greatest Rivalry Test made headlines around the world when two Embraer E190 jets flew approximately 12.5m to 14m above Cape Town Stadium.
OBERHOLZER: RGR exceeded expectations
A planned flyover did not take place before the third Test at FNB Stadium, with Airlink reportedly withdrawing its application while the South African Civil Aviation Authority continued to investigate the Cape Town display.
Airlink also volunteered black-box data from both aircraft to the aviation authority as part of the investigation.
