Goldie reckons Boks duped Wallabies

Jeff Wilson believes the Wallabies had a “false sense of security” after beating a much-changed Springbok side and were no match for the All Blacks in the Bledisloe Cup opener.

Australia beat South Africa 42-38 in Perth three weeks ago after Bok boss Rassie Erasmus made 13 changes to his starting XV following the Rugby’s Greatest Rivalry series decider.

New Zealand, meanwhile, had lost three successive Tests to the world champions before facing the Aussies at Eden Park this past Saturday.

Speaking on Sky Sport’s The Breakdown, Wilson claimed the All Blacks were better prepared after their bruising encounters with Erasmus’ Boks.

ICYMI: Bok wing calls it quits

“I was hoping I would see that performance on the back of the challenges against South Africa and what we saw was a team that was too big and too strong over 80 minutes,” the former New Zealand wing said.

“The physicality, the brutality they were looking for, the Wallabies couldn’t handle it.”

Wilson said the Kiwis’ experience against the full-strength Boks had raised their standards, while Australia’s win had given them an inaccurate measure of their readiness.

“I think they had a false sense of security coming into that game, they didn’t understand what playing against a top Springbok team meant and the All Blacks came in prepared.”

New Zealand won 50-19 in Auckland, extending their unbeaten Test record at the venue to 53 matches.

Wilson emphasised Dave Rennie’s men now had to maintain the level they reached against the world’s top-ranked side in Sydney this week.

“They’ve played against the No 1 team in the world because that’s what the Springboks proved they were,” he said. “Now they’re trying to hold that and improve.”
