Jake to miss out on Fiji job?

Jake White is reportedly no longer the favourite to become Fiji’s new head coach.

According to the Fiji Sun, former Wales and British & Irish Lions boss Warren Gatland has emerging as the leading candidate, with players understood to have already been informed of his impending appointment.

The Fiji Rugby Union is reportedly finalising negotiations with its preferred candidate and could make an official announcement within the next 24 hours.

White, who had previously been tipped to take over, remains in contention, but his financial demands could prove a stumbling block for the cash-strapped union.

The 62-year-old guided the Springboks to World Cup glory in 2007 and served as the Bulls’ director of rugby from 2020 to 2025. He is currently working as a consultant at Selborne College in East London.

Gatland, meanwhile, coached Wales across two spells, winning three Six Nations Grand Slams, and led the Lions on three tours.

Fiji are preparing for their next Test against Japan on 24 October, with the squad due to assemble on Monday.

The Pacific Islanders will then face France, Ireland and Italy during the European leg of the Nations Championship in November.

Fiji are set to meet the Springboks in a World Cup warm-up Test in Gosford on 18 September 2027.
