Okmalumkoolkat Finally Releases Long-Awaited Album “iTheku eThekwini.” Okmalumkoolkat has officially released his long-awaited album iTheku eThekwini, ending years of anticipation with an 11-track project rooted in Durban’s culture, sounds, and identity.

The Durban-born and Umlazi-raised artist, whose real name is Smiso Zwane, released the project through Sjambok Studios on 22 October 2026. More than a conventional hip-hop album, iTheku eThekwini brings together different sounds, visual influences and cultural references that reflect the city he calls home.
The project has undergone years of development, having initially been eyed for release in late 2024. Okmalumkoolkat has described it as the most difficult record he has ever completed, pointing to the challenge of creating music that captures the sheer volume of information and events shaping recent years.
In late 2025, the artist explained that he wanted the album to reflect the density of the “good/bad news that hit us in 2020/2025.” Rather than rush the process, he continued refining the music, building a layered body of work influenced by information overload, cultural shifts and the experience of relearning in a rapidly changing world.
The release also required one final adjustment. Originally scheduled to arrive on 15 October, the album was pushed back by a week after Okmalumkoolkat and his team felt that awareness around the release was not where it needed to be. The artist acknowledged that “amatamani bebena”, meaning many people did not know the project was coming, prompting the team to use the additional time to generate more attention.
The album’s artwork carries the same distinctive creative approach that has defined Okmalumkoolkat’s work. Created by the artist himself, the collage brings together photography, old technology and personal archival material. Images of Moses Mabhida Stadium, Durban’s golden beaches, Zulu dancers and urban landscapes appear alongside playful digital elements, creating a visual representation of eThekwini’s character.
Several tracks have already given listeners a glimpse into the project. “Into Yabantu Ababili” arrived as the first official single in February 2026, while “Soon As I Land”, featuring Tony Dayimane, offered another preview of the album’s direction.
“iBattery”, produced by G-Star Beatz, also attracted attention after Okmalumkoolkat hinted that listeners would need to know the lyrics to keep up during car karaoke. Meanwhile, “Top Five” had previously been teased as another gritty offering from the project.
iTheku eThekwini builds on the experimental hip-hop sound that Okmalumkoolkat has developed throughout his career, following the gold-certified Mlazi Milano (2016) and uShukela eTiyeni (2022), alongside the shorter Durban Curry Powder project.
This latest release continues his exploration of music that moves between hip-hop, cultural expression and futuristic production. Its layered approach reflects an artist willing to take his time with a project rather than conform to the fast-moving demands of the digital music landscape.
Early reactions on social media have been positive, with listeners describing the album as “dope” and welcoming its arrival after the lengthy wait. The response reflects the anticipation surrounding a release that has become about more than its music, carrying the identity of a city closely associated with Okmalumkoolkat’s artistic journey.
With iTheku eThekwini finally available, Okmalumkoolkat returns to Durban’s cultural landscape with a project shaped by years of experimentation, refinement and a desire to capture the complexity of the times. For the artist known as Durban’s Future Mfana, the album marks another chapter in his ongoing relationship with the city that helped shape his sound.
