Ludwig’s Bulls journey comes full circle

For Reinhardt Ludwig, Loftus Versfeld has always been more than just a rugby ground.

Growing up in the shadow of the iconic stadium, home to Affies next door, the 24-year-old lock’s story is one of a boyhood dream realised in Bulls colours.

Leadership has never been something Ludwig had to search for. A head boy and 1st XV captain at school, he credits much of that instinct to the environment he was raised in.

“I wouldn’t say it’s definitely something you have to work on,” said Ludwig, who this week extended his Bulls contract to 2030. “I’ve always enjoyed taking leadership and taking charge.

“I learned a lot from guys like Duane Vermeulen when I was a youngster at the Bulls, how he treated younger players and other players in the environment.”

His connection to Loftus runs deeper than most.

“There was once in 2009 where me and my dad went to a game, we sat on the stand that loved the Bulls side. I still remember that like yesterday, I’ve still got my old T-shirt. Since then I just fell in love with the game . . . never thought that I would sit there and one day play for the Bulls.”

That childhood dream has since produced unforgettable senior moments, none bigger than recently facing the All Blacks at Loftus.

“That’s definitely one of the most special moments in my career,” Ludwig said.

Looking ahead, Ludwig’s ambitions remain grounded in blue – and green and gold.

“I would love to be in the Bok group, whether it’s next year’s World Cup or 2031. That is the ultimate goal.”

His Bulls hero growing up was unmistakeable.

“I loved Pierre Spies. I actually did a school speech about him. The way he played, the way he moved, his handoff, absolutely loved it as a youngster. We ended up at the same school too, which is quite special for me.”

Beyond rugby, Ludwig was a serious long jumper in matric, clearing 2m, athleticism he credits for sharpening the explosiveness now powering his rise through Loftus.

– The Bulls jersey is available at Puma.com, Puma retail stores, SportSA, Studio 88, Takealot, Totalsports and Sportsmans Warehouse at a recommended retail price of R1,099 (adult) and R999 (junior sizes).
