AKA’s Debut Album “Altar Ego” Turns 15! Fifteen years later, AKA’s debut album Altar Ego still sounds like the arrival of an artist who knew he had something to prove.
Released on 23 August 2011, Altar Ego officially turns 15 this week, giving South African hip-hop another reason to revisit the project that introduced Kiernan “AKA” Forbes as one of the genre’s most ambitious new voices.
At the time, AKA was stepping out from the shadow of his earlier work with hip-hop group Entity and establishing himself as a solo force. The album became the foundation for a career that would eventually make him one of the most influential figures in South African hip-hop.
Altar Ego arrived after a string of singles that had already started building anticipation. “I Want It All”, featuring Khuli Chana and Pro, came first, followed by “Victory Lap” and “All I Know”. “Victory Lap” in particular became a major early-career statement, helping position AKA as an artist capable of turning confidence and ambition into radio-ready anthems.
The album itself brought together swagger, introspection and experimentation across tracks such as “Reign”, “Bang”, “High School Cool”, “Snakes and Ladders”, “When I’m Gone” and the now-iconic “Victory Lap”. It also featured appearances from artists including Khuli Chana, Pro, Buffalo Soulja, Buks, Tumi, HHP and Amu, while comedian Loyiso Gola appeared throughout the project’s skits and interludes.
Speaking to TimesLIVE shortly before the album’s release, AKA described the project as personal and said he wanted it to meet a high standard. That ambition became part of the album’s identity, with Altar Ego presenting an artist determined to make his first major statement count.
The gamble paid off. The album went on to earn major recognition, including Best Newcomer, Best Hip Hop Album and Best Produced Album at the 2011 Metro FM Music Awards. At the 2012 South African Music Awards, Altar Ego also won Male Artist of the Year and Best Street Urban Music Album.
Its legacy stretches beyond the awards. Altar Ego captured AKA at the beginning of a journey that would see him evolve from an emerging rapper into a defining figure in the South African music industry.
Fifteen years on, songs such as “Victory Lap” and “I Want It All” remain reminders of the hunger that fuelled his early career. The album is more than a debut in retrospect. It is a snapshot of an artist announcing himself, setting his standards and laying the first bricks of a legacy that continues to shape conversations around South African hip-hop.
As the anniversary arrives, Altar Ego stands as one of the projects that helped define the sound and ambition of a new generation of Mzansi rap.
