Super Eagles midfielder Alex Iwobi has opened up on the stark differences between representing Nigeria and England, revealing some of the challenges he has experienced while playing for the three-time African champions.
Speaking on the High Performance podcast, the Fulham star described Nigeria’s national team environment as less structured than England’s setup, although he stressed that he remains proud to represent his country.
“Playing for England and playing for Nigeria are very different. England’s a bit more strict. In St George’s Park or in a hotel, no one’s allowed to come in, strict food, strict regime that’s it.”
Iwobi also logistical issues he has encountered with the Super Eagles.
“Sometimes your flight’s not booked properly. You have to book your own flight. You get there and sometimes the people at the airport are not ready to pick you up, so sometimes you have to make your own way.”
He also spoke about other challenges players occasionally face while on international duty.
“The hotels are OK. Sometimes the light goes out; sometimes you don’t have anywhere to charge your phone. England, no one’s allowed in the hotel. Nigeria, people can come into your room whenever they want.”
Despite the difficulties, Iwobi made it clear that he has never regretted choosing Nigeria over England, having represented the latter at youth level before switching allegiance in 2015.
“It took a lot of convincing. I have no regrets. I did love England, but because I grew up in a Nigerian household, Nigeria has always been a part of me.”
The 30-year-old has gone on to become one of Nigeria’s most influential players, earning close to 100 caps for the Super Eagles.
