Alexander: Nations Championship a game-changer

SA Rugby president Mark Alexander believes the Nations Championship is the first step towards establishing a global rugby season.

Alexander, a long-time advocate for a unified rugby calendar and closer alignment between the northern and southern hemispheres, was among the game’s leading administrators in Dublin this week for the unveiling of the Nations Championship trophy ahead of the inaugural 12-team tournament.

The four Sanzaar nations – South Africa, New Zealand, Australia and Argentina – along with invited teams Fiji and Japan, will represent the southern hemisphere. They will be joined by England, France, Ireland, Scotland, Wales and Italy from the north.

“The Nations Championship is more than a tournament, it is a statement of unity and ambition,” said Alexander. “It reflects our collective belief that rugby’s future must be shaped through partnership, not fragmentation. This is the biggest step forward for the international game since the advent of professionalism.”

The 42-match tournament kicks off on 4 July, with the southern hemisphere teams hosting three rounds before travelling north in November for the remaining fixtures. The tournament will culminate in a finals weekend at Twickenham.

Alexander said the significance of the competition extends well beyond the results on the field.

“It is a bold, future-focused initiative built on collaboration, innovation and a shared commitment to the long-term sustainability of the global game,” he said.

“With the unveiling of the trophy that teams will compete for this year, it marks the beginning of a hugely significant chapter for the sport as it prepares to go truly global.”
