Arsenal confirms its first signing of the 2026/27 season

Arsenal Football Club have officially confirmed their first signing ahead of the 2026/27 campaign, completing the permanent transfer of Piero Hincapié from Bayer 04 Leverkusen.

The Ecuador international initially joined the Gunners on loan last summer, with Arsenal including an option to make the deal permanent. Following an impressive debut campaign in North London, the club has now exercised that option, reportedly paying around £34.5 million (€40 million) to secure the versatile defender on a five-year contract.

Hincapié was impressive during his first season at the Emirates, making 39 appearances across all competitions. Comfortable at both left-back and centre-back, the 24-year-old became an important part of Mikel Arteta’s defensive setup, impressing with his composure on the ball, pace, and defensive awareness.

His performances played a key role in Arsenal’s successful campaign, which saw the club lift the Premier League title and reach the UEFA Champions League final.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta praised Hincapié’s mentality and commitment, describing him as a “warrior” whose attitude perfectly reflects Arsenal’s ambitions. The move marks the beginning of what is expected to be another busy transfer window, as the Premier League champions continue to strengthen their squad ahead of the new season.
