Former Springbok captain André Vos argues that attack coach Tony Brown must sharpen the world champions’ skills to help punish the All Blacks in the red zone.
Writing for Stuff.nz ahead of Saturday’s second Test of the Rugby’s Greatest Rivalry series, Vos claims Brown’s biggest task is ensuring South Africa convert opportunity into points.
Vos pointed to Rassie Erasmus’ men’s failure to convert their chances when camped in the 22 during last week’s 33-16 defeat by New Zealand at Ellis Park.

“When the All Blacks are at their best, they believe in tempo and skill set. They are of the mindset that if they do that for the full 80 minutes, they will eventually wear down the opposition,” writes Vos, who led his country 16 times in 33 Tests between 1999 and 2001.
“Where attack and skills coach Tony Brown can help is make sure that the players’ skills are refined when we have the ball in hand.
“When the Springboks are in the red zone, as seen in Test one of Rugby’s Greatest Rivalry, they really need to hurt the scoreboard.
“I see that as Brown’s biggest role … It’s about putting the hours in terms of preparation and, when match day comes, you have to make sure that you front up.
“When the Boks do, they look dangerous.”
Vos also previews the rematch between No 8s Jasper Wiese and Ardie Savea at Cape Town Stadium, praising Savea’s work rate while rating Wiese as being in career-best form.
Hoeever, the ex-loose forward reckons asking Wiese to play all four Tests of the series at full tilt might be excessive, and Erasmus could rotate him with the likes of hybrid André Esterhuizen.
According to Vos, the Boks’ defence will continue to be pivotal, since allowing the All Blacks quick front-foot ball makes them nearly unstoppable.
