Back To The City Set To Unveil International US Rap Star For 2026 Festival. The race to uncover the identity of Back to the City’s mystery international guest has officially begun, and hip-hop fans across South Africa are already throwing out their biggest predictions.
Organisers of Africa’s biggest hip-hop festival have announced that a surprise US artist will headline the 2026 edition, but before making the reveal, they are giving fans a chance to guess correctly and win tickets.
In a social media announcement, the festival revealed that 20 lucky winners will each receive a double ticket by correctly naming the mystery performer. To enter, fans must SMS “BTTC” followed by the name of the artist they believe will be announced to 43366. An example entry would be “BTTC Kendrick Lamar.”
The competition closes on 11 August 2026, while the long-awaited headliner reveal is set for 12 August at 10:00 a.m.
Excitement around this year’s festival is already building rapidly. Organisers revealed that more than 8,621 tickets have already been sold and warned fans not to rely on the competition alone, as ticket prices are expected to increase.
Back to the City returns to Newtown on 10 October 2026 for a full-day celebration running from 2:00 p.m. until 2:00 a.m. This year’s edition carries the theme Against All Odds, marking the festival’s 20th anniversary while also commemorating significant milestones in Johannesburg’s history and South Africa’s youth uprising legacy.
The anniversary celebration is expected to bring together some of the country’s biggest hip-hop stars alongside the mystery international act, continuing the festival’s reputation as one of the continent’s premier celebrations of hip-hop culture.
With only days remaining before the headline announcement, social media has become a playground for fan theories, with countless names being suggested in hopes of landing one of the coveted ticket prizes. Whether the mystery guest turns out to be a global rap icon or a surprise left-field choice, anticipation for the 2026 edition continues to reach new heights.
