Former England loose forward Lawrence Dallaglio has been forced to part with his 2003 World Cup winner’s medal and other memorabilia.
The 54-year-old, who was declared bankrupt last year, has put the medal from England’s triumph in Australia up for auction with an estimated value of £50,000 to £80,000 (R1.1-million to R1.7-million).
Dallaglio started at No 8 when England beat the Wallabies 20-17 after extra time in the 2003 World Cup final in Sydney.
The medal is one of several pieces from Dallaglio’s decorated career that are being auctioned.
His runners-up medal from the 2007 World Cup, where England lost to the Springboks in the final in Paris, is valued at £10,000 (R218,000), while his 2003 Six Nations winner’s medal is expected to fetch around £5,000 (R109,000).
Medals from his successful career with Wasps, where he won two European Cups and four English Premiership titles, have been valued at about £8,000 (R174,000) each.
According to The Telegraph, the entire collection, which also includes Dallaglio’s Man of the Year awards, could raise as much as £180,000 (R3.9-million).
Auctioneer Budds described the 2003 medal as marking “the pinnacle of world rugby and the singular greatest achievement in English rugby history”.

Dallaglio was declared bankrupt in May last year after accumulating hundreds of thousands of pounds in debt to HM Revenue and Customs and other creditors.
The former England captain recently spoke publicly about his financial difficulties and the personal challenges he faced following his divorce, admitting: “I could’ve done things a lot better.”
Since retiring from professional rugby in 2008, Dallaglio has worked as a TV pundit.
