An ex-Sharks winger has received a lifeline and is set to switch to the shorter format by joining the Springbok Sevens team.
Marnus Potgieter is training with the Blitzboks in Stellenbosch after a call from head coach Philip Snyman. The 27-year-old featured for the Sharks in the 2026 Currie Cup before being sidelined through injury.
“I packed up my things in Durban and went to my parents on the farm,” he was quoted by News24.
“I was waiting for French clubs to get back to me about the possibility of replacing injured players in the short term. But I was overlooked for two opportunities.”
DAVIDS: Target on Blitzboks’ backs
A centre or wing in the 15-man game, it is understood Potgieter played in two of five warm-up matches against Germany last week as a forward and should feature again this week.
“After playing 15s for 10 years, I have a lot of respect for these guys for how hard they work,” he said. “I’m still learning, which excites me because I’m seeing a new way of playing rugby.”
The World Sevens Series kicks off in Dubai on 28 and 29 November, with the back-to-back champion Blitzboks defending their Cape Town title the following weekend.
