Boeta Chamberlain says he’s ready to make his mark at the Lions and is not backing away from the challenge of fighting for a place in the starting team.
The 27-year-old, who can play flyhalf or fullback, recently joined the Lions after turning out for the Newcastle Red Bulls last season. Before his time in England, he had stints at the Sharks and Bulls.
In Chris Smith, the Lions have a player who is a pure general at flyhalf, while Springbok Quan Horn rarely puts a foot wrong at fullback.
“I don’t see it as a negative aspect that there are a lot of very good players here,” Chamberlain was quoted by Netwerk24 as saying during a gathering at Constitution Hill in Johannesburg. “I’m someone who puts a lot of value on fresh energy and good competition. Ultimately, it is to all the players’ benefit if there is competition.
“A new player can’t just walk into a team and think he is guaranteed a place. You have to work for it. You also have to adapt to the way a team does things. That is how you earn the respect of your new teammates.”
With Horn currently with the Springboks in Australia for next Sunday’s Test against the Wallabies in Perth, the expectation is that Chamberlain will wear the Lions’ No 15 jersey for their first URC clash of the new season.
The Lions kick off their season next Saturday against defending champions Leinster at Ellis Park.
