Bok rookie relishing Morgan match-up

Paul de Villiers says facing Wales star Jac Morgan will be a massive challenge, but the young Springbok insists the world champions are focused first and foremost on their own standards.

The Stormers flanker has retained the No 6 jersey for Saturday’s Nations Championship clash in Durban after another impressive display in the Springboks’ 42-28 victory over Scotland at Loftus.

After being thrust into his Test debut at the last minute against England, De Villiers now heads into just his third international with the benefit of valuable Test minutes and more preparation time.

RASSIE: We got the mix to match Wales threat

The 23-year-old expects a fierce battle at the breakdown against Morgan, one of Wales’ standout performers.

“I think because we also play in the URC, we kind of know their players and what they can bring,” De Villiers told the media in Durban on Monday.

“Jac Morgan is obviously a very good player and also a good fetcher.

“He’s one of their players that stands out a lot, but I think for us the big focus will be on ourselves, focusing on our own standards and our own goals for Saturday.

“Not saying we’re not looking at them, but ja, he’s a good player.”

De Villiers made an immediate impact after receiving a late call-up for the England Test and looked increasingly assured in his second appearance against Scotland.

He admitted there were still nerves heading into another Test, but said having a full week to prepare had made a significant difference.

“Obviously the first one came at very short notice, so having a full week to prepare has been really good for me,” he said.

“There’s still a lot of nerves, but it’s good to know what’s coming and to feel more ready for the game.

“I’ve said it before, but credit to this environment, the coaches and players around me.

“They really help everyone feel comfortable and ready to play.”
