The Springboks are under no illusions about the size of the task awaiting them against Argentina on Saturday night, writes CLINTON VAN DER BERG.
Captain Siya Kolisi and assistant coach Mzwandile Stick both warned that a wounded Pumas side will be desperate to prove a point on home soil.
Speaking at a pre-match press conference in Buenos Aires, Stick dismissed suggestions that Argentina are weakened by the absence of several Europe-based players, insisting the world champions never underestimate an opponent.
“We always prepare the same way, even if we’re playing against Australia, or Georgia, or New Zealand. Nothing changes when it comes to our standard.”
Stick praised Argentina’s evolution under their coaching set-up, noting the Pumas came close to beating top-tier opposition in recent outings, including a narrow finish against England.
“They’re playing in the right areas, they’re more disciplined than before,” he said. “Once they get a gap, they’re very good at keeping the ball alive. We have to be at our best, especially around the collision areas.”

Kolisi, who has battled his way back from injury in the past, said he was feeling sharp heading into the clash and was determined not to overthink the occasion.
“I feel good. The past two weeks have been really good,” Kolisi said. “I don’t want to put any pressure on myself. I just want to go out there and play my part in the team. There’s no need for extra motivation, it’s a tough game in itself.”
Both men singled out Argentina captain Pablo Matera for special mention, with Kolisi describing him as a player who commands deep respect across the rugby fraternity.
“He’s a player who can break down and carry the ball very well. He loves his country and he plays for his people,” Kolisi said, adding that Argentina’s feverish crowd would add another layer of intensity to the contest.
Stick echoed the sentiment, describing Argentina as an “emotional” nation whose supporters feed directly into the players’ performance.
“We know they take pride in what they do and how they operate,” Kolisi said. “They’re very emotional people, so it’s going to be a tough game, but I think that’s what we need, especially going into the bigger challenges ahead.”
