Siya Kolisi remembers former teammate Hyron Andrews as an amazing human being who brought energy and positivity to any team he represented.
The Lions, Sharks and Sale Sharks lock died suddenly in France on 16 October. A public memorial was scheduled for Friday evening in Paarl, followed by a private funeral on Saturday and a celebration of his life at Kings Park on 11 November.
Speaking from Turin in the build-up to Saturday’s clash between the Springboks and Italy, Kolisi shared how Andrews’ death has affected the players, adding that he cannot fathom how difficult it must be for his widow, Maiglin, and sons.
“I don’t think it sank in for a lot of us because it feels like we were just with Hyron the other day,” the Bok skipper said.
“I played with him and I know the guys were very close to him, how tough it was for them.

“But for his wife, the family … She supported him throughout everything. She travelled all around the world to support Hyron.
“I can imagine it’s tough for us, but I can’t imagine what it’s like for her and the kids. We’re just thinking of them and praying for them.
“He’s an amazing human being. I don’t think anybody can say anything bad about him,” Kolisi added.
“How he just brought energy. Moments that he didn’t play, he didn’t care. He’s always there for the guys. Same energy all the time.
“And he was willing to go to places to get the opportunity to play. A proper team man and good person off the field too. Thinking of his family during this time.”
