The Boland Cavaliers opened their Currie Cup campaign with a gritty win against the Vodacom Bulls XV in Wellington on Sunday.
Last season’s semi-finalists scored three tries to one in wet and muddy conditions to win 24-10.
Boland struck early when hooker Joshua Eras went over from a lineout maul. Fullback James Tedder kicked the touchline conversion before leaving the field.
The Cavaliers continued to pile on the pressure, with the Bulls paying the price for repeated infringements when lock Nicolaas Janse van Rensburg was yellow-carded.
Just as he was set to return to the field, prop Dayan van der Westhuizen scored Boland’s second try, converted by winger Jayden Bantom.
The Bulls finally got on the board on the stroke of half-time when flyhalf Keagan Johannes kicked a penalty goal to make it 14-3.

While that was cancelled out by Bantom early in the second half, the Bulls got back into the game through replacement hooker Shaun Schürmann, who went over from a lineout maul. Johannes’ conversion reduced the deficit to seven.
But Boland secured the win when a 20m maul was collapsed by the Bulls, resulting in a penalty try and a yellow card to captain Nama Xaba.

In round two next weekend, the Bulls travel to Kimberley to tackle Griquas, with Boland hosting Western Province.
