Named after her birth name, Bontle Makhwelo, the project offers a more personal look into the rising rapper’s artistry, celebrating her identity, lyrical confidence and the distinctive sound she continues to bring to South African hip-hop. Initially announced as an EP in early October, Bontle has since arrived on major streaming platforms under the album category, marking another important milestone in her growing career.

The project was preceded by the release of “Abracadabra,” a MashBeatz-produced single featuring Mochen RSA and Reason, also known as Sizwe Alakine. The track gave listeners an early taste of what to expect, with Buzzi Lee delivering sharp wordplay and unapologetic bars while embracing the idea of recognising the magic within oneself.

Explaining the inspiration behind the song during its promotional run, the rapper said, “Abracadabra is about realizing that you are the magic. It’s about the magic of the pen and the magic within yourself.” She further drove that message home with the line, “O se ka nnyatsa, ake Tshwane le oo,” making it clear that she is not one to be underestimated or measured against anyone else.

Beyond its lead single, Bontle brings together an exciting lineup of collaborators, including Mochen RSA, Reason, Loatinover Pounds and Thato Saul, among others. Across its seven tracks, the Pretoria native leans into the elements that have helped define her sound, from her commanding SePitori lyricism and versatile flows to the cultural identity and township expression woven into her music.

The release also comes at a significant point in Buzzi Lee’s journey. Having recently been announced as Apple Music’s latest Up Next artist in South Africa, she continues to build her profile through notable collaborations and a growing catalogue of releases. Her contributions to the star-studded “Sho Boy” and the award-winning “Skuta Baba Remix”, alongside her own release “Bao Jela” with K.Keed, have further strengthened her presence in the local hip-hop scene.

Now, with Bontle, Buzzi Lee gets to put her name, voice and artistic vision at the centre of the conversation. More than just another addition to her catalogue, the project is a statement of identity from an artist embracing where she comes from while confidently defining where she wants to go.

With Pretoria’s unmistakable flavour running through her music, Buzzi Lee continues to make a compelling case for herself as one of the voices to watch in South African hip-hop. Bontle is out now on all major streaming platforms.
