Cassper Dismisses Hip Hop vs Amapiano Rivalry As “Dumb.” In a candid interview with UpClose, South African rap heavyweight Cassper Nyovest offered sharp insight into the country’s ever-evolving music landscape. Pushing back against the long-running narrative of a rivalry between Hip Hop and Amapiano, he instead highlighted the natural rhythm of change that defines the industry.

The conversation turned to the global rise of amapiano, a sound that has moved from the streets of Johannesburg to international stages. Asked how he feels about hip hop’s current position, Nyovest responded with clarity and calm, showing no trace of resentment.
“Hip Hop was never a South African thing. So when we were booming, and we were at the forefront of South African music, it was a special moment. But it was never the thing. We just loved what we did, and we happened to carve moments in history, and now it is back to what it was. It was backpackers, it was a niche, and that does not mean it is unhealthy,” he said.
He went further, dismissing comparisons between the two genres.
“Putting it against amapiano, which is dance music, is not only unfair, but it is dumb. It is part of us. Amapiano is not a hip hop rivalry; it is a genre, and it is dope. If you can do it, do it. If you cannot, don’t do it.”
His remarks arrive at a time when amapiano continues its dominant run in 2026, with new releases flooding charts across Africa and beyond. Meanwhile, South African hip hop has quietly returned to its roots, leaning into lyricism, storytelling, and independent momentum, thriving outside of mainstream pressure.
Nyovest, known for landmark moments like his Fill Up stadium concerts, reminded fans that musical waves are always shifting. The period when local rappers dominated the airwaves was a rare and powerful chapter, not a permanent state. In Mzansi, hip hop has always been grounded in a niche culture built on bars, authenticity, and raw expression. Returning to that space is not regression; it is a return to form.
