Cassper Opens Up On How His Battle With Depression Changed His View Of Suicide. Cassper Nyovest has opened up about his battle with depression and the profound shift in perspective it gave him on suicide, mental health and the possibility of healing.
The South African hip-hop heavyweight reflected candidly on his experience, admitting that he once struggled to understand why someone would consider suicide and even viewed the decision as selfish or a sign of weakness.
According to Cassper, that perspective changed when he personally experienced depression and was diagnosed with the condition.
“I could not control my mind,” he explained, describing the experience as feeling like a prisoner inside his own brain.
The rapper said that before experiencing depression himself, he viewed challenges such as financial difficulties, career setbacks and sadness as problems that could simply be solved. His own mental health struggle, however, showed him that depression could feel fundamentally different.
“It’s something else when your brain turns on you,” Cassper said, explaining that he eventually understood why someone in that state might desperately want the pain to end.
Looking back on how far he has come, Cassper recalled a recent moment after leaving the gym when he experienced an overwhelming sense of happiness.
“I was just happy,” he said. “I never thought that I would feel this at any point in my life again.”
That moment made him reflect on how trapped he had previously felt and how difficult it was to imagine that the darkness would ever lift.
Cassper also spoke about the role his Christian faith played in his recovery. He said he turned to Jesus because he did not want to take medication, while stressing that his recovery was neither immediate nor effortless.
“It wasn’t an overnight success or victory. It took time,” he said.
Today, the rapper said he feels free, loves his life and has learned to let go of his desire to control everything, choosing instead to take life one day at a time.
His message ultimately became one of encouragement to anyone currently struggling with depression or suicidal thoughts.
“I just want you to know that as much as it seems like it’ll never end, as much as it seems like you are trapped, as much as it feels like there is no solution to what you’re going through, it’ll pass,” he said.
While Cassper acknowledged that his own testimony is deeply rooted in his faith, he encouraged people not to lose sight of the possibility of a better future.
He reminded those struggling that they are loved, valued and important, urging them to hold on for “one more hour, one more day, one more month, one more year.”
“The best days of your life are ahead of you and not behind you,” Cassper said. “You are going to be okay. You’re going to be fine. You’re going to heal.”
His deeply personal reflection offers a glimpse into a chapter of his life that he once feared would never end, while turning his experience into a message of hope for others facing similar struggles.
