Cheetahs coach Frans Steyn has received a massive boost for Sunday’s crucial Currie Cup showdown against the Boland Cavaliers in Bloemfontein.
The hosts have made several changes for the penultimate round clash at Free State Stadium, with Springbok double world champion Faf de Klerk returning at scrumhalf and Tiaan Swanepoel moving into the No 10 jersey.
Swanepoel replaces Jaco van der Walt, while De Klerk comes in for Rewan Kruger. Sisonke Vumazonke also returns to the starting XV at flank, with Simon Miller moving to lock.
In the backline, Carel-Jan Coetzee slots in at outside centre, while Clayton Blommetjies is restored at fullback. Jooste Nel moves to the bench.
TEAM: Cavaliers change 10 for Cheetahs clash
The Cheetahs and Griquas are level on 21 points at the top of the standings, with the Pumas on 17 and Boland on 16.
The Cavaliers strengthened their playoff position last week with a 38-29 away win over the Lions, moving into the top four with two rounds remaining.
A Cheetahs victory would virtually secure their place in the playoffs while keeping Steyn’s men in contention for a home semi-final.
Boland, meanwhile, can bolster their own cause with another upset on the road. The Cavaliers won last year’s meeting 37-35 in Wellington.
CHEETAHS – 15 Clayton Blommetjies, 14 Michael Annies, 13 Carel-Jan Coetzee, 12 Zander du Plessis, 11 Prince Nkabinde, 10 Tiaan Swanepoel, 9 Faf de Klerk, 8 Neels Volschenk (c), 7 Sisonke Vumazonke, 6 Ramon Uys, 5 Victor Sekekete, 4 Simon Miller, 3 Frankie Dos Reis, 2 Juan Smal, 1 Tebogo Nkosi.
Bench: 16 Stefan Venter, 17 Dux Manyama, 18 John-Kelly Okonkwo, 19 Arno van der Merwe, 20 Pierre Uys, 21 Rewan Kruger, 22 Cohen Jasper, 23 Jooste Nel.
