Cheetahs No 10 to turn out for Boland

A Cheetahs flyhalf will play for the Boland Cavaliers in this year’s Currie Cup.

Netwerk24 reports that George Lourens is set to reunite with former coach Hawies Fourie in a significant boost for the Wellington-based outfit. Fourie coached him at Maties and again during his time with the Cheetahs.

A former Paarl Gimnasium pupil, Lourens first rose to prominence in the Varsity Cup with Maties before enjoying a standout season with Shimlas in 2022 that saw him named Varsity Cup Player of the Tournament.

His performances earned him a contract with the Cheetahs, where he made his Currie Cup debut later that year.

Lourens was part of the Cheetahs squad that lifted the Currie Cup in 2023 and subsequently signed a contract extension through to 2026.

He has also featured for the Cheetahs in the EPCR Challenge Cup.

However, Lourens’ progress was disrupted last year by an arm injury suffered in a pre-season match against Griquas, ruling him out for several months.

The 26-year-old only returned to action in December and featured during the Cheetahs’ recent SA Cup campaign.
