Former Wallabies and Argentina boss Michael Cheika could make a surprise return to Super Rugby after emerging as a leading contender for a vacant post.
According to RugbyPass, Cheika has become a front-runner after several top candidates reportedly declined the opportunity to succeed Dan McKellar as head coach of the Waratahs.
Cheika enjoyed a successful spell in Super Rugby between 2012 and 2015 before leaving to take charge of Australia.
He has spent the past season in the NRL as an assistant coach with the Sydney Roosters, having left his job as director of rugby at the Leicester Tigers in June 2025.

RugbyPass reports that former Ireland and Wallabies coach Joe Schmidt was approached but has since accepted a coach development adviser role with Ulster.
Scott Robertson and Eddie Jones’ long-time assistant Scott Wisemantel are also understood to have turned down the position.
