Stormers flank Paul de Villiers says his first week in the Springbok camp has been an invaluable learning experience.
The uncapped 23-year-old earned a call-up after an impressive season with the Stormers and has wasted no time soaking up knowledge from the world champions.
“It’s only been a week, but it’s been an awesome week where I’ve learned a lot,” De Villiers said on Monday in Johannesburg where the extended Bok squad are preparing for the international season.
The Springboks face the Barbarians after South Africa A take on Zimbabwe in a double-header at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on Saturday.
“We’ve got outstanding players in the squad who I can learn from. We’ve also got players who are keen to share advice and knowledge with the newer guys.
“For me it’s the perfect scenario. We’ve got good coaches, good players and a great environment for learning.”

Asked about the biggest difference between life at the Stormers and the Springboks, De Villiers said: “The training standards are a massive thing. You’re competing against Springboks and against guys who want to be here.
“That lifts the intensity of a normal training session to another level. It’s a senior environment and a national team, so naturally the standards and expectations are higher.”

Despite the step up, De Villiers says the newcomers have been encouraged to stay true to the qualities that earned them national recognition.
“We’re sitting here because the coaches saw what we did for our franchises. They just expect us to keep doing that and work even harder.”
While he admits wearing the green and gold has always been an ambition, De Villiers says his focus remains on contributing in the same way he did for the Stormers.

“If I get an opportunity this weekend, it will be awesome, regardless of which team I play for.
“My focus isn’t on taking someone else’s role. It’s about continuing to do what got me here and working hard on the things I do well.
“Whether it’s against the Barbarians or Zimbabwe, I’m just excited to get onto the field, contribute to the system and do my best for the team.”
