Dlala Thukzin Shares Insights On What SA Hip Hop Needs To Hit Global Heights. Speaking from years of experience in producing and collaborating with some of the country’s top talents, Thukzin laid out a simple yet strategic roadmap for success.

Thukzin emphasised the importance of crafting hits that are both accessible and memorable. “For SA Hip Hop to rise, number one, if you want a hit, don’t rap too much,” he said. “Be like AKA. Make it simple so that we are able to sing along. People should be able to remember it and vibe to it easily.” He stressed that overly complex verses and rapid-fire flows, while impressive, can sometimes alienate listeners who just want to connect with the music on a more instinctive level.

He also highlighted the critical role of production in creating chart-topping tracks. “Make sure your producer produces the song with the right beats,” Thukzin advised. Drawing inspiration from international artists, he pointed to Gunna’s approach as a model for consistency and impact. “Let’s say you want to drop an album, like how Gunna makes his music. Gunna’s secret is having the right beats. You need beats that suit the mood of the song, not just following the trap trend all the time.”

His remarks come at a time when SA Hip Hop is partially doing well but not at its prime, unlike the golden era of 2014-2015, when the scene was at its peak. Thukzin is not the first artist to voice this perspective; fellow hip hop heavyweights Emtee and Cassper Nyovest have shared similar sentiments, emphasising the need for catchy, well-produced tracks that balance lyrical skill with commercial appeal.
