Doris doubtful for Bok duel

Ireland will likely head into November’s Nations Championship Test in Dublin against the Springboks without skipper Caelan Doris.

The Irish Times reports that the 28-year-old is expected to remain sidelined until at least the new year after complications delayed his recovery from surgery.

The Leinster No 8 injured his foot during the club’s URC final win over the Bulls in June and subsequently underwent a knee procedure. An infection in the knee has since slowed his rehabilitation.

He had initially been expected to return for Ireland’s November campaign, but his absence now appears likely to extend beyond the Nations Championship.

Ireland are scheduled to face Argentina and Fiji before hosting the Boks at the Aviva Stadium on 21 November. South Africa’s campaign begins against Italy in Turin on 7 November before a meeting with France in Paris on 13 November.

Doris missed Ireland’s three-match July campaign after the initial injury. He had also been ruled out of last year’s British & Irish Lions tour because of a shoulder problem.
