Eddie suspended after tirade

Eddie Jones has been banned for four matches and docked pay for verbally abusing match officials during an U23 tour of Australia.

Japan Rugby sanctioned Jones following what it described as “verbal abuse directed at local match officials” during the team’s tour of Australia in April.

It includes a four-match suspension and a salary reduction.

“I accept the disciplinary action of the JRFU relating to the U23 Japan national team tour of Australia,” Jones said in a statement.

“Some inappropriate remarks that I made caused discomfort to local match officials and other related parties.

“I would like to offer my sincere apologies to everyone involved. I deeply regret my behaviour and words and will make every effort to ensure that this doesn’t happen again.”

Jones will miss two matches involving a Japan select side against Hong Kong, the Japan XV fixture against the Maori All Blacks, and Japan’s Nations Championship opener against Italy on 4 July.

He will be eligible to return for Japan’s clash against Ireland on 11 July.
